National Preservation Month

Missouri State Penitentiary Cell Block excavation

Did you know May is National Preservation Month? At CD Companies, we’ve got a great team working on some exciting historic preservation projects, including the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City, MO!

The Missouri State Penitentiary has a long history starting in 1834 when construction began.  The Penitentiary saw thousands of inmates come and go before it was decommissioned in 2004.  The State of Missouri along with the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau now open the Penitentiary up for visitors to tour and get a glimpse into life inside the walls.

Like many historic sites across the country, the Missouri State Penitentiary has seen a lot of change throughout its history.  Buildings were constructed or demolished based on the needs of the prison.  In 1984, when digging to construct an exercise yard, workers discovered a long-forgotten, buried cell block.  At the time, the uncovered cell block was not useful to the prison and was reburied.  In 2019, CASCO was very excited to be part of the team that excavated the cell block and cannot wait to see this buried treasure as part of future tours!
